The Department of Commerce has submitted to the Office of Managementand Budget (OMB) for clearance the following proposal for collection ofinformation under the provisions of the Paperwork Reduction Act (44 U.S.C.Chapter 35).

Agency: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA).

Title: Economic Data Collection for the Trap Fishery inthe U.S. Caribbean.

Average Hours Per Response: 1.5.

Needs and Uses: Several studies have shown that thehaphazard placement of traps damages hard corals and gorgonians. Inaddition, to physically damaging hard corals and gorgonians traps targetvarious over-exploited reef fish species, which further threaten the healthand stability of coral reef habitats. To protect coral reef habitats andensure the sustainable use of reef fish resources, the Caribbean FisheryManagement Council (CFMC) is considering limiting the total number of trapsin the fishery. The goal of the proposed survey is to gather socioeconomicinformation on the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John, and St.Croix) trap fishery to support the management and conservation efforts ofthe CFMC. The information collected will be used to satisfy regulatoryobjectives and analytical requirements, and to assist the CFMC in selectingpolicies that meet conservation and management goals and minimize, to theextent possible, any adverse economic impacts on fishery participants.
